Deprived of a defective battery, phone resorts to remotely starting oven to satisfy pyromania

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 12:21 AM

Electronics and small, potentially lethal bouts of combustion go together like peas in a pod, but you know phones — they’re always branching out, conquering new markets, getting smarter, and doing things they’ve never done before. Take the common exploding battery, for instance; what happens when that trick gets played out? One creative option would be to find the closest source of natural gas and ignite it from afar, which is what one New York gentleman’s Sony Ericsson (a classic P910i, we believe) has taken to doing. It seems that the phone somehow triggers the burners on his Magic Chef range to ignite when it’s called — in fact, they don’t just light up, they go straight to the hellish “HI” setting, as the appliance’s display is eager to point out — and other phones tested have incited similar effects. For its part, Maytag (Magic Chef’s parent company) says “this situation is highly unusual,” so we wouldn’t freak out about setting our phones on unlit ranges just yet — unless you’ve already got a healthy fear of burning your $500 phone to a crisp for other unrelated reasons.

Apple enlists David Puddy to take on the Laptop Hunters

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 10:40 PM

Apple’s created a whole new chapter in its “Get a Mac” ad campaign based on targeting Microsoft’s successful Laptop Hunters series, and while at this point it’s just a lot of muddled back-and-forth, the gang in Cupertino managed to spice things up a little by bringing in an all-too-recognizable face and voice: Patrick “David Puddy” Warburton. Mr. Brock Samson / Joe Swanson / The Tick comes on as the top-of-the-line PC who some say has a “much too fast” processor but prone to viruses and causing headaches — you knew were the narrative was going. Video after the break, and you can go ahead and start work on your parody video, “You got a question about PCs, you ask the eight ball.”

[Thanks, Travis]

WSJ: Steve Jobs ‘pouring almost all of his attention’ into an Apple tablet

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 10:00 PM

There isn’t a lot to go by here, but if the Wall Street Journal’s sources are to believed, recently-returned Apple CEO Steve Jobs is currently focusing the vast majority of his attention on the oft rumored tablet device, micromanaging every detail much in the way he did with the iPhone. The report also says that the tablet project has been twice killed by Jobs in recent years — first time because of bad battery life, which we get, and second because of insufficient memory, which seems a little less believable. Interestingly and uncharacteristically, Jobs took it upon himself to respond, saying via email, “much of your information is incorrect.” If Apple really is ramping up to unveiling a tablet, the first of its kind for the company, we have no doubt Jobs would be personally watching over every minute detail of it — what we really want to know is when we might see something materialize, and that’s still very much a mystery.

Video: PS3 Slim’s Japanese commercials likely to cause fear, distress, and confusion

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 8:20 PM

The folks at Palm may think they’ve learned how to make some creepy commercials, but let’s face it, they’ve got nothing on Sony. The Japanese company has a long history of discomforting, unexplainable advertising that rivals a David Lynch movie — in fact, Lynch even directed his own television spot back in the PlayStation 2 days, itself reminiscent of UNKLE’s “Rabbit in Your Headlights” music video from years before. This latest set of videos for the PS3 Slim in Japan is no exception. Turn off all the lights, raise the volume of your speakers, and bow down before the masters of unnerving gadget promotion just after the break — we included the Lynch ad, too, in case you were interested.

Nokia Booklet 3G is really real, as seen on camera

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 7:00 PM

Not that we thought it was a fabrication this morning, but Reuters has managed to snap a few pictures of the Nokia Booklet 3G “mini laptop” to assure us that there is indeed at least one physical unit in existence, located at the company’s Helsinki headquarters. As seen in another photo, the model sports the blue lid, and just so you’re absolutely clear how a 10.1-inch netbook sizes up to an actual phone, we’ve got a side-by-side with an E71. Looks like we’ll have to wait until Nokia World to figure out what Intel Atom processor they’ve got inside that makes sense to pair with a HDMI output, however.

Xbox 360 Elite in white box turns up on Amazon, still $399

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 5:40 PM

A couple of flyers and an in-the-wild shot (not to mention some discounted Pro models) not enough to convince you of Microsoft’s apparent dual-SKU strategy? Then how about a fresh new listing of a white-boxed Xbox 360 Elite on Amazon? Unfortunately, the console is still listed at the usual $399.99, but it is clearly designated as the “newest version,” and it’s in stock right now. Of course, it may not be the worst idea to wait a bit longer for the seemingly inevitable price cut, or at least consider the also-in-stock Spring 2009 bundle with Halo 3 and Fable II for the same price if you just can’t hold out another day.

[Thanks, Billy Bono]

Microsoft delivers OneApp app framework for featurephones

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 4:20 PM

Who said Microsoft’s mobile strategy has to be limited to Windows Mobile? Redmond has just announced OneApp, a comprehensive framework for delivering apps on a variety of featurephones — largely in emerging markets — where processor horsepower and memory are both at a premium. The solution is deployed in harmony with partners (carriers, primarily) that work to offload app processing and storage into the cloud and keep the on-phone footprint as small as possible (Microsoft is quoting a scant 150K for the OneApp executable itself). At present, OneApp is up and running on South Africa’s Blue Label Telecoms where subscribers have access to Windows Live Messenger, Facebook, Twitter, and RSS apps among others; more launches are planned around the world “within the next year” at which point an SDK will be made available to devs who want in. Behind the scenes, the app is based on web standards — think Palm’s webOS — and is currently compatible with a variety of S60-based Nokias, Sony Ericsson featurephones, and Samsung’s U900 Soul. And no, don’t worry, this isn’t Windows Mobile 7.

Editorial: Apple, the FCC, and the sideloading solution

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 2:40 PM

As Engadget’s resident former attorney, my first instinct when I sat down to re-read Apple, AT&T’s and Google’s FCC filings regarding Google Voice was to put on my lawyer hat and try to find inconsistencies that might shed some additional light on what had actually happened — if Apple’s account differed from AT&T’s, for example, perhaps those subtle differences would reveal the actual truth. This proved to be much more difficult than I had imagined, however: not only had Google redacted the most interesting part of its statement, I came to a profound realization after just a few moments of work.

I don’t care.

Each of the responses was long, dense, and polished to a high-gloss shine that made each company’s actions seem not only rational and justified, but almost inevitable in a way — as I wrote at the time, Apple isn’t exaggerating when it says that these are entirely new problems, and simply reading the individual letters paints a fairly sympathetic picture of how this whole chaotic process ended up in such disarray. But that’s a perspective that assumes deeply-rooted interest in the systems and procedure of the App Store, a perspective that assumes there’s a good reason we should be looking to lawyers and government regulators to figure out what’s going on with the most exciting and vital software market that we’ve seen in a long time.

Nokia N900 puts on makeup, does hair for leaked press shot

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 2:20 PM

Normally, we’d take a look at something like this and say, “yeah, could be real, could be fake.” Goodness knows there are enough mega-talented graphic designers in the world with the free time to craft this. Here’s the thing, though: this phone / MID hybrid — the latest in Nokia’s Internet Tablet series — has already been outed enough times so that we know this has to be a genuine press shot. If we had to guess, Espoo fashioned it in preparation for its Nokia World event in Germany early next month where the N900 will presumably be announced into officialdom; there’s no sign on when or how the T-Mobile USA version will be unveiled, but we’re getting pretty amped for it.

Simon the robot wins award, is super cute, seems pretty boring to hang out with

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 12:40 PM

Simon — the creation of Georgia Tech labs and Dr. Andrea Thomaz — is a robot with an articulated torso and anthropomorphic hands — and a head that will stop you in your tracks. This handsome little fellow was designed to help study human – robot interactions, and he will be learning different social skills over the coming weeks and months. We don’t have many details as to what Simon spends his time doing, other than hanging out looking insanely cute, but check the video of him in action after the break — and by “in action,” we definitely mean putting a blue block into a little blue bucket super, super slowly.

Nanovision MIMO 710-S and 720-S USB monitors hands-on

Nanovision MIMO 710-S and 720-S USB monitors hands-on

So you want a little more desktop real estate, eh? You could replace your existing screen with a bigger, higher resolution one, but sometimes a bigger monitor can just be, well, a little too big. You could always go with a secondary or tertiary monitor, but sometimes your desk is just too small. In that case a little USB auxiliary monitor is just right, and MIMO’s latest, the 710-S and 720-S, the are slimmer, sexier, and far more portable than ever. We thought that would make them perfect for anyone with a Goldilocks complex and slinky laptop, but the truth is, sadly, a little more complicated.

Tegra to hit ‘media pads’ soon says company man Mike Rayfield

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 11:40 AM

Mike Rayfield, the general manager of NVIDIA’s mobile unit, sat down for a lengthy — if somewhat restrained — chat with Hexus recently, and he had some fairly interesting things to say about his company’s Tegra strategy. The discussion mostly consists of generalities about the the roadmap for the high-power, low-weight chipset, but it takes a more interesting turn when Rayfield goes into detail on the types of devices we can expect to see in the near future. At about two minutes into the conversation, there’s mention of a “media pad,” which prompts some further inquiry from the interviewer. Rayfield goes on to describe the device as a “3G capable touchpad” ranging in size from 7- to 13-inches. Now what’s notable about the mention is that back in April reports were flying hot and heavy that Apple was working on a “media pad” device in partnership with Verizon which would “define the damn category.” We don’t like to wildly speculate, but since Apple and NVIDIA have a healthy history of teaming up on special projects, and since the rumored focus of the mythical Apple tablet is media playback and gaming, we wouldn’t rule out a possible connection here. If you want to do your own sleuthing, check out the full video for yourself after the break — and we recommend a frame-by-frame look at 2:23.

Tesla founder quietly dismisses lawsuit against the company, Musk

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 10:20 AM

Remember that time, way back in June, when we told you that former Tesla Motors exec Martin Eberhard was suing the company and its chief (a certain Mr. Elon Musk) for sundry offenses, including forcing him out of the company, wrecking his car, and besmirching his good name? According to the San Jose Business Journal, the suit was quietly and unceremoniously dropped on August 7 at the request of Eberhard. Of course, the most likely explanation for this turn of events (besides Eberhard’s suddenly finding his Zen and deciding to drop out of the material world for a life of quiet contemplation) is a settlement of some sort. Maybe he’s getting that coveted roadster after all? According to The Register, a Tesla spokesperson refused to “speculate on why Eberhard dropped his suit.” When pressed for a follow-up, the same site received an automated reply: “I am on vacation”.

Snow Leopard shipping August 28th for $29, order now

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 8:40 AM

Well, it’s not September, but we’re not going to hold an early launch of its performance-focused Snow Leopard OS against Apple. The Apple store has come back online bearing an order page for OS X version 10.6 in Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Pro… oh wait, it’s just $29, regardless (as an upgrade from 10.5). August 28th, that’s when, now go ‘n get it.

While you wait for that order to ship, Apple wants you to know that the Finder is more responsive, Mail loads messages twice as fast, Time Machine with complete initial backups 80 percent faster, and a 64-bit version of Safari 4 is 50 percent faster than its predecessors. There’s even QuickTime X with a redesigned player that lets users view, record, trim and share video. Of course, this release also includes Grand Central Dispatch

P.S. Requires Intel-based Mac.

Apple stores down globally: Snow Leopard possible

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 7:20 AM

Unless you’re crazy enough to believe that Apple would announce its tablet computer or iPods with cameras without a press conference, you shouldn’t expect anything too big when Apple’s online store (down globally) comes back up later today. Odds-on favorite would be a page for Snow Leopard orders when Apple comes back up at the usual 830 time slot ET. That would give the elves in Cupertino plenty of time to ship discs by August 28th. Then again, it could just be maintenance — it’s not Tuesday for crissake.

Video: Sony PRS-600 Touch is fast but too dim to satisfy PRS-505 owner

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 5:40 AM

Touch, it’s the panacea of e-book readers, right? Sure, just so long as readability isn’t sacrificed in the process. Flickr user Doodlydood uploaded some pics and video of Sony’s new $300 PRS-600 (on the left above) reader and did a quick comparison with his legacy PRS-505. Unfortunately, the glare from the plastic resistive touchscreen is an issue and the weak contrast, like the touchscreen PRS-700 before it, pales by comparison to Sony’s two year old PRS-505 with glass display. On the flip side, page turns on the new 600 were fast and “work extremely well” compared to the PRS-505. Unfortunately, that’s a minor victory when the whole purpose of an e-reader it to well, you know… read. See for yourselves in the videos after the break.

Video: Samsung’s YP-M1 TouchWiz interface given a sideways glance

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 4:20 AM

With an “NVIDIA chipset” (presumably, Tegra) underpinning the new YP-M1 media player, Samsung’s got plenty of horsepower to drive its customizable TouchWiz UI across that 3.3-inch AMOLED touchscreen sporting 480×272 pixels. It’s not ZuneHD-sexy but it’s not bad. Unfortunately, not bad’s not good enough in a waning market for dedicated media players lacking voice and data radios, WiFi, or a web browser. But if you run, run, as fast you can… after the break you’ll catch the Gingerbread Man.

Xbox 360 Pro 60GB for $230 during Woot Sellout

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 2:40 AM

While it’s no guarantee that a retail price drop is coming, seeing an Xbox 360 Pro selling for just $230 (plus $5 shipping) during a Woot Sellout certainly piles-on the evidence. The Woot model is your typical 60GB Pro (rumored to have reached end-of-life) with HDMI-out, wireless controller, headset, and component AV cable. However, instead of carrying a $300 price it costs about $70 less than your nearest brick-and-mortar will charge. The best deal you’ll find until the rumored price cuts get official. So what’s it going to be, slim, pull the trigger or wait?

[Thanks, Joshua W.]

Fujifilm Finepix Real 3D W1 slammed in early review, company responds point-by-point

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 1:00 AM

Akihabara News’ early review of the Fujifilm W1 3D Camera pretty much laid everything out from the get-go with its headline, “The worst camera ever made: the review.” It assuredly caused more than a few raised eyebrows, not the least of which from Fujifilm itself. In an interesting and welcoming move, the company invited the publication to a face-to-face meeting — not for some physical redemption, mind you, but to address all the points of disappointment. There isn’t a lot said to alleviate concerns, and the common thread among all replies is pretty much that this is a new field that currently caters to a very small niche, and there’s gonna be speed bumps for time to come — in other words, better luck next time. Still, it’s somewhat refreshing to see a major company tackle the subject head-on and in public view — now if only we could make this an industry-wide trend.

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 10:00 PM

Peculiar name change or no, Acer’s 11.6-inch Aspire 1410, the ULV known in Europe as 1810T, is now available in the US. Price tag is $460.33 from Cost Central and that nets you a 1.4GHz Intel Core 2 Solo SU3500, 2GB RAM, a 250GB HDD, and Windows Vista. There’s quite a few Sapphire Blue models in stock, while Diamond Black are only available in limited quantities. Waiting for Ruby Red, you say? Sorry, no such luck yet, but keep checking.

Xbox 360 Elite in white package in the wild, Pro SKU missing on back-of-box chart

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 7:00 PM

Can’t say we’re all that surprised given other sightings, but one anonymous tipster has sent us pics from a local Best Buy of the 120GB Xbox 360 Elite in a shiny white package with a back-of-box chart that neglects to mention the Pro models, essentially striking it from the records. It’s still scanning at $399 for now, but having seen other retailers print flyers quoting $299, the computers very well may be updating just after some official Microsoft announcement, which wouldn’t surprise us at all if it happen sometime this week, just ahead of the PS3 Slim launch. Peruse the pics in higher-res format below.

Storm 2, Motorola Sholes, Nokia Twist dated for Verizon, according to leaked doc

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 6:40 PM

We’ve heard about a good number of these phones were bound for Verizon Wireless already, but if this leaked doc via Boy Genius Report is to be believed, we now have a much better idea when they should be within reach of consumer hands. First up is Samsung Rogue for sometime this month (we previously heard today, but that’s looking very doubtful at this point) for an estimated $370 subsidized. Next on the calendar is the “female centric” Nokia Twist 7705 in late September for $230, which more likely than not is the swiveling device we’ve seen on two prior occasions. Also due out next month is the Samsung Intensity for $130 (screenshot after the break). LG Chocolate Touch was rumored by Best Buy for today, but here it’s listed for an October debut, along with Storm 2, a “low cost QWERTY” HTC Razzle / Blitz 2 (XV6175, perhaps?), and the Motorola Sholes “Google Phone,” red D-pad likely in tow, all with TBD price tags. Rounding out the list in late November is the BlackBerry Curve 2, which we wouldn’t be surprised if it turned out to be the 8530. The first one expected for public is the Rogue, replacing the Alias 2 that just launched back in May. What gives Verizon, no love for e-ink textpads?

HTC Mega materializes again, brings along spec list

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 5:20 PM

HTC’s Mega certainly isn’t the most exciting of the company’s upcoming products to leak lately, but it’s looking likely that it’ll have one of the nicer price tags on it for a Window Mobile 6.5 device. Another screenshot has surfaced that matches up with one we saw earlier and shows off more of the sides and back. Along with it comes a new list of specs — not too shabby, but nothing too exciting, either. According to ai.rs blog, it has WCDMA/HSPA and quad-band GSM support, a 3.2 megapixel camera, microSD slot, 802.11b/g, Bluetooth 2.0, AGPS, and still the 2.8-inch QVGA screen and 528MHz Qualcomm processor we heard about previously. If you’re already playing with the Mega’s TouchFLO 2D-infused ROM, consider this supplementary material for getting a more thorough idea of what the actual phone will look like when it does come out — whenever that is.

TRKBRD surface touchpad puts your weekend DIY project to shame, probably

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 4:00 PM

It may not seem like much from this video, but Malmö University graduate student Rob Nero has assembled himself surface-based touchpad using all Arduino products and “simple Algebra.” Dubbed TRKBRD, the device uses hyper-fast flashing LEDs and IR sensors to calculate the XY coordinates of the shadow, and subsequently the finger itself. We haven’t seen it hooked up to a computer just yet, but we hope there’s more to come. Videos of the successful trial run and some preliminary testing and wiring after the break.

Samsung N510 unboxed, looking rather large sitting next to the NC10

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 3:40 PM

We know the specs, the release window, even the price — it feels like we’re already intimately acquainted with Samsung’s ION-powered N510 netbook, but honestly, we’ve never really seen it outside of a touched-up press photo. Netbooknews.de has gone ahead and fixed all that, giving us a good idea what we’ll be taking home to mom and dad, from retail packaging all the way to the exposed underbelly. There’s even a number of side-by-side shots with its older brother NC10, which looks downright tiny sitting next to its more powerful, but also pretty small kin. Want a good glimpse of what’s likely to be the first ION netbook to US market? All relevant materials lie beyond the read links below.

Update: Turns out the ION-equipped N510 has been pushed back until after the Windows 7 launch. So much for setting precedent.

[Thanks, buttons]

Samsung Instinct HD pops up on Best Buy’s website with 5 megapixel camera, TV out

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 12:20 PM

As it turns out, Instinct HD really was the final name that Samsung decided for its Sprint-bound S50 / m850 Dash, at least as far as Best Buy is concerned. The “Weekly Ad Specials” listing confirms that the smartphone really does handle HD video, both recording and playback, with a 5 megapixel camera and a TV out connection for sharing. It’s also got visual voicemail, WiFi, and corporate calendar (likely Exchange and Lotus Domino) support. No price listed, but whatever it is will be effective from today through September 26th, so using our great powers of logic and deduction, we’re gonna predict it’ll hit stores sometime within the next month — bold assumption, we know. Don’t let us down, Sammy.

[Thanks, Benny L]

Video: Storm 2’s new touchscreen tech explained with mindblowing clarity, WiFi confirmed

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 11:00 AM

The last video we posted of the Storm 2 doing its SurePress thing has been unceremoniously pulled from YouTube, but this new video really makes up for it. It turns out the screen uses piezo electronics to detect pressure at any point on the screen, instead of the all-or-nothing click button on the Storm 1, and our video host was kind enough to explain this in painstaking detail in the video embedded after the break. The screen actually stiffens when it’s off or locked, and has a sort of spongy give to it when alive. He also confirmed in no uncertain terms the GSM and CDMA versions of the device will be packing WiFi. According to his Twitter account, we should be expecting a video about the OS soon as well.

[Thanks, Kristjan]

AOC’s 2436Vw does 24-inches of power sipping LCD on the cheap

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 8:20 AM

It’s nothing too astonishing in the specs department (300 nits, 60,000:1 contrast, 5ms response time), and the DVI and VGA plugs are rather lonesome without an HDMI or DisplayPort plug to tag along, but we can’t fault AOC for the 2436Vw’s $220 pricetag. The 49W of power draw in a 24-inch 1080p display doesn’t hurt either, and we’re sort of digging the clean design. The 2436Vw is out now.

PCI Express 3.0 specification formally delayed, products pushed to 2011

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 7:00 AM

We’ve been enjoying (or just dealing with, depending on perspective) PCI Express 2.0 since early 2007, and it now looks as if we may still be utilizing said protocol come early 2011. Way back in June of ‘08, we began to hear whispers that the next iteration of the technology would be finalized by the end of this year, but now the PCI SIG has formally delayed the release of the specification until the second quarter of 2010. What does that mean for the consumer? Try coping with the fact that you won’t see a PCIe 3.0 product until 2011. As the story goes, the delay was needed in order to “maintain backward compatibility with current PCI Express standards,” and while the technical details of all that may interest some, it’s the awfully unfortunate setback that’s most notable here. But hey, at least all those PCIe 1.0 cards that are still totally relevant will work with your next (next-next?) PC!

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 5:20 AM

Zune HD’s "Apps" menu item spotted in the Marketplace, still short on details

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 4:00 AM

At Best Buy’s Zune HD preview today a certain Matthew Arkin on Qik was able to shoot footage of the “Apps” item that resides within the “Marketplace” section on the device. It’s still incredibly unclear what Microsoft’s plans are for that functionality — they’ve long admitted its existence, but have waffled on the name and have been reticent to show it off in meetings with us. Microsoft so far has only promised to have applications on par with the games currently available for Zune, but there’s obviously a lot of implied competition with Apple’s App Store that the word “Apps” on a touchscreen device conjures up. On video (embedded after the break) the rep is asked if there’s an SDK, and apparently Matthew got a “yes” offscreen, but we’re not really sure of the veracity of that statement, or what it means for developers at the moment — hopefully good, freedom-ey things.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Gateway’s 11.6-inch EC1803h CULV ultraportable surfaces in Canada

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 12:40 AM

All the cool kids are building CULV-powered 11.6-inch miniature wonders, and Acer-owned Gateway is no exception. This new EC1803h unit (a rebadge of sorts of Acer’s Timeline 1810T) just popped up in Canada, and has a lot in common with Gateway’s LT2000 netbooks — though somehow knowing there’s a “real” processor underneath makes it seem just a bit more sexy. Unfortunately, the $600 Canadian (about $550 US) pricetag isn’t quite as grand as the $400ish CULV laptops that Acer and Dell have been showing, but it’s hard to fault the 3GB of RAM, 6 cell standard battery and 250GB hard drive. No word on when this will head to the States.

Dallas Cowboys HD scoreboard hanging too low?

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 11:20 PM

It’s not necessarily on the level of Yankee Stadium’s jetstream, but the new Dallas Cowboys stadium has its own problems. The massive HDTV strung up over the field was hit by a punt during the first NFL game played there last night. So far, by the rules that will result in a do-over, while owner Jerry Jones says there are no plans to move the screen and he doubts anyone will hit it during the regular season. Check the video evidence embedded after the break, somehow we doubt this is the last time this happens.

After bigger, thinner and brighter, Samsung planning even faster LCDs for IFA

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 8:20 PM

The jury is still out on whether 200 / 240hz motion technology (last year’s prototype pictured above) provided an appreciable difference but that won’t stop Samsung from bringing 400 / 480hz (PAL / NTSC standards) LCD HDTVs to IFA 2009 next month. This is the second time we’ve heard rumors of a spec bump in motion technology, using black frame insertion instead of more complicated (& expensive) tech to create new frames from existing ones. LG has already demo’d its 480hz LCDs and the two will surely race to get a bigger number on store shelves, but we’ll need an eye-on before determining if it’s an upgrade worth waiting for.

Zune HD box spotted?

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 7:00 PM

According to one tipster, the Zune HD was a no-show today at both of his Houston-area Best Buys, so hopefully this little tidbit can make it up to that loneliest of all Zune fans. According to CrazyphoneGuy of Twitter and his prodigious Twitpic account, the picture above is of the Zune HD’s new box. It looks quite a bit like existing Zune boxes, but that’s certainly no slight. Anyone else track down the Zune HD at a Best Buy today, or was NVIDIA just fooling with us?

[Thanks, Brayan]

Enhanced Gmail Plug-in for BlackBerrys arrives, but only syncs one way

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 4:20 PM

Lackluster Gmail support has been a real pain point for BlackBerry users, and we’ve really been hoping that this new “Enhanced Gmail Plug-in” would solve all that. It’s out as of today, and we’ve certainly gotten some improvements, like support for archiving messages, marking spam and managing labels / stars. Unfortunately, these new management features are only live synced one way, from the phone to the Gmail server, so many of the actions that take place desktop side won’t be reflected on the phone once that particular message has been picked up by the BlackBerry Internet Service. There’s also the small problem of installing the thing: we haven’t been successful so far on two different BlackBerries, and you have to make sure to uninstall the existing Gmail Plug-in. Meanwhile, in BlackBerry Enterprise Server land, the Google Apps Connector has now gone live, which means Google Apps users get push Gmail and what seems to be much tighter Exchange-style syncing. Let us know if you get either of these things working with your particular setup.

Video: Robot hand shows off amazing dexterity, speed

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 2:40 PM

So you want something to look forward to in your fast approaching old age, eh? If robots playing baseball doesn’t quite cut it, how’s about a robohand that redefines what we understand by the word “dexterity”? The Ishikawa Komuro Laboratory is at it again, this time demonstrating robotic appendages with a reaction time of a single millisecond. Using harmonic drive gears and a (really) high-speed actuator, the three-fingered hands can tie your shoelaces, tweezer your brow, and even perform some kung fu pen spinning for the ladies. Video after the break — skip ahead if you must, but don’t miss out on the slow-mo action at 2:40 in the demo, it’s pure kinetic poetry.

Lucky Mac mini buyer got Snow Leopard disc in the box?

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 2:20 PM

If his story is to be believed (and it seems pretty believable), an anonymous tipster to Engadget Japanese got a nice surprise with his recent Mac mini purchase: a Snow Leopard install disc. It’s one of those vanilla hardware-specific install discs, dubbing itself Mac OS version 10.6, and clearly packing the goods if the screenshots don’t lie. This only adds confusion to the ship date, which has been listed as August 28th on Apple’s online store, dubbed as “September” elsewhere, and obviously been totally disregarded in this specific case. No matter what, it looks like we won’t have long to wait. Hit up the read link for a couple of Japanese-infused screencaps.

Northern Michigan University teams with Motorola for campus-wide WiMAX

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 10:00 AM

Northern Michigan University was fairly early to the game in offering laptops and campus-wide WiFi to its students, and it looks like it’s now stepping things up even further with a little help from Motorola, which is providing the backend for NMU’s new campus-wide WiMAX network (a first in the US). Better still, the university is also providing some brand new WiMAX-equipped ThinkPads to nearly 3,000 of the school’s more than 9,000 students, and it’s also making a range of laptop and desktop WiMAX adapters available to students with non WiMAX-enabled computers. With a radius of some 30 miles, the network will also encompass a number of off-campus sites, and be made available to local schools and municipal offices though a licensing arrangement.

Researchers create robots that can learn to lie and deceive, on purpose

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 8:40 AM

Teaching robots to find “food” and share it with others seems like a fairly worthwhile and noble endeavor, no? Well, it apparently wasn’t quite enough for a group of researchers from Switzerland’s Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, who had the bright idea to to augment said robots with a new artificial neural network that let the robots learn a host of new abilities — namely, scheming, lying and deceiving. Apparently, in their younger days, the robots would flash a light whenever they found food to let their buddies know where it was, but that of course caused the food to dwindle a lot quicker. After a bit of trial and error and a few tweaks from the researchers, however, the robots apparently discovered that they could keep more of the food for themselves if they didn’t flash the light, and it seems like its been Lord of the Flies on an incredibly tiny scale ever since.

TomTom’s iPhone car kit promo video is enticing, but still no mention of price or release date

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 4:20 AM

Not to knock cellophane tape as a method for in-car iPhone navigation, but if you want to use the new TomTom app in a more proper setting, you’ll want the official TomTom car kit. In addition to enhancing the GPS signal and charging your iPhone, it’s also got hands-free dialing and a speaker that’s (presumably) better than the phone solo for giving directions. At a rumored price of just under $200 with software, it’s not a bad deal if you were planning to shell out $100 for the US maps, anyway. We’re still on the fence, but the hypnotic soundtrack of the promotion video is admittedly alluring. See for yourself after the break.

[Thanks, Arthur]

How would you change Nintendo’s Wii MotionPlus add-on?

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 1:20 AM

It took the Big N right around a year to actually ship its Wii MotionPlus dongle after first showing it off at E3 2008, and now we’re curious to know if you think the wait was worth it. We’ve already spilled our deepest, darkest thoughts on the $20 add-on accessory, but now that Wii Sports Resort is out (and still firmly lodged within your Wii’s optical drive), we just can’t wait another second to hear from end users. Are you pleased with the additional sensing capabilities? Has it enhanced your gameplay as you thought it would? What aspects would you like to see changed? You just paid a Jackson for a brick that attaches to your perfectly functional Wiimote — don’t miss your chance to pick it apart.

The Daily Roundup: here’s what you might’ve missed

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 1:00 AM
AT&T, Apple and Google respond to the FCC over Google Voice and the iPhone App Store
Apple’s not exaggerating when it says these are entirely new problems, and whatever happens next will set a precedent for a long time to come.

Google refutes USA Today report on blocked Skype application
The story is surely fine fodder for a FUD enthusiast up to that point, but it appears (gasp) that USA Today may have gotten one minor fact wrong.

Video: Another look at PS3 Slim and its removable HDD
The 2.5-inch Serial ATA hard drive is indeed swappable and is done so without risk of voiding your warranty.
Other news of import

PS3 Slim bitsreams Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA audio, at last
Slowly, ever so slowly we’re beginning to learn about the internal differences between Sony’s new PS3 Slim and its chubby ancestry.
Bell’s Palm Pre commercial couldn’t be more Apple if it had an Orba Squara soundtrack
Hip, upbeat music? Check. Mysterious hands showing off mobile apps and other smartphone capabilities? Check.

Wiipod modder shoves an MP3 player in his Wiimote, calls it a day

Readers, don’t act like you’re appalled that this mod consists entirely of an old iPod shuffle shoved into the battery compartment of a Wiimote game controller. If anything, you should be amused that this mod consists entirely of an old iPod shuffle KIRF shoved into the battery compartment of a Wiimote game controller. See for yourself after the break.

Qik for iPhone 3GS update removes ‘WiFi only’ restriction, 3G streaming is a go

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 9:20 PM
Well, that was fast. Just one week after hitting the scene, Qik for iPhone 3GS has been updated to move that nasty “WiFi only” restriction, meaning you can now stream your videos to the internet over a 3G network. We just tried it ourselves and, sure enough, it works like a charm. After you’ve read through all that FCC literature, hit up the read link and download the (thankfully still free) app — just be careful how much fun you have with it this weekend. Let’s see how AT&T’s network handles this one. [Warning: iTunes app link.]

PS3 Slim shipping on August 26th, says Amazon

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 8:00 PM

It looks like there might be a trend brewing among products with nondescript September release windows coming out in August instead — first with Apple, and now with Sony. Supply shortages or no, Amazon’s telling those who pre-ordered the PlayStation 3 Slim the first day it was announced should expect to have their consoles in-hand on Wednesday, August 26th, almost a whole week before the new month begins. Delivery estimates are subject to change, of course, but Amazon’s not one to typically screw around with shipping confirmations. Any other early adopters received confirmations lately?

[Thanks, Devin!]

Google refutes USA Today report on blocked Skype application

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 6:40 PM

While Apple was busy batting away the FCC with its litany of reasons why its app approval process is totally hunky-dory, Google was apparently having it’s own VoIP-related firefight. It seems that an article in the USA Today which hit newsstands this morning alleges that the internet giant sought to block (dare we say reject) a full Skype application from making its way into the Android Market. The story claims that the application was neutered to become “a watered-down version of the original that routes calls over traditional phone networks” — which would obviously cast a decidedly malevolent slant to the benevolent company’s policies.

The story is surely fine fodder for a FUD enthusiast up to that point, but it appears (gasp) that USA Today may have gotten one minor fact wrong. Namely, that Google had any unsavory aim to clip the wings of the Skype app. According to company man Andy Rubin (on Google’s Public Policy Blog), the “lite” moniker was only attached due to technical limitations of the Android platform. In his words:
Here are the facts, clear and simple: While the first generation of our Android software did not support full-featured VoIP applications due to technology limitations, we have worked through those limitations in subsequent versions of Android, and developers are now able to build and upload VoIP services.

As we told USA Today earlier in the week Google did not reject an application from Skype or from any other company that provides VoIP services. To suggest otherwise is false. At this point no software developer — including Skype — has implemented a complete VoIP application for Android. But we’re excited to see — and use — these applications when they’re submitted, because they often provide more choice and options for users. We also look forward to the day when consumers can access any application, including VoIP apps, from any device, on any network.
Note the jab there at the end? Okay, swell. Of course, even if Google had rejected the app outright, users still could have installed the software through other avenues, as the Android Market is only a suggestion — not a mandate — for how consumers should acquire apps on Google’s platform.

AT&T, Apple and Google respond to the FCC over Google Voice and the iPhone App Store

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 6:00 PM

Whoa — we were just sent AT&T response to the FCC’s investigation into the rejection of Google Voice apps from the iPhone app store, and Ma Bell isn’t pulling any punches: according to the letter, AT&T “had no role in any decision by Apple to not accept the Google Voice application.” That puts the ball pretty firmly in Apple’s court, but it doesn’t close the door on AT&T’s involvement in App store approval shenanigans entirely, since the letter also says “AT&T has had discussions with Apple regarding only a handful of applications that have been submitted to Apple for review where, as described below, there were concerns that the application might create significant network congestion.” Not only did that result in CBS and MobiTV killing the Final Four app’s ability to stream video over 3G, it also explains what happened to SlingPlayer Mobile — we’ll see what the FCC says about that.

Update: And here come Apple and Google’s responses as well! We’re digesting everything as fast as we can, we’re going to do this semi-liveblog style after the break, so grab a frosty and dive in.

FCC to look into Google Voice, iPhone debacle next week?

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 4:20 PM

The FCC’s next open committee is on Thursday, and maybe — just maybe — we’ll be able to get to the bottom of this whole “App Store / Google Voice rejection” mess. First, the committee plans to look into ways to “foster innovation and investment in the wireless communications market,” issues related to “truth-in-billing,” and exclusivity agreements between carriers and handset manufacturers, which critics say punish consumers in rural areas that the “big four” (Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile) don’t serve. Also in the queue, according to Ars Technica, is the wireless open access docket, which will mostly be given over to Skype’s inquiry into Apple’s rejection of Google Voice for iPhone and its relationship to a “pending Petition filed by Skype to confirm a consumer’s right to use communications software and attach nonharmful devices to wireless networks.” And of course, all this goes down a few days after Apple, AT&T, and Google were required to respond to letters from the Commission inquiring about Apple’s dissing the Google Voice app. If you’ve never had the opportunity to sit in one of these sessions, let us tell you — they’re incredibly exciting, fast-paced events. As always, the meeting will me broadcast live over Real Video — hit the read link for details.

Engadget Podcast 160 – 08.21.2009

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 2:20 PM
They said it couldn’t be done: could these three men really repeat the on-air magic they conjured during last week’s live show? The internet yelled a resounding “yes!” yesterday, as Josh, Paul and Nilay chatted up the PS3 Slim and all other manner of technological trivia. Your hosts’ voices charged through internet air waves and filled the hearts of those who tuned in live with irreplaceable joy as podcast history was being made. Oh, you missed it? Don’t worry, we’ve got a static copy of the broadcast right here. It’s pretty good.

Hosts: Joshua Topolsky, Nilay Patel, Paul Miller
Producer: Trent Wolbe
Song: The Entertainer

First two Microsoft retail stores now hiring

Filed under: GSM, GSM Mobile, GSM Phone, GSM Weblog, General — Jon Larson @ 1:00 PM

Interested in handling the Zune HD and other such goodies ahead of time? Microsoft’s first two retail stores are now hiring, and if you’ve always dreamt of being a “retail associate” now’s your chance to stand on the front lines. The job will require at least some geographical proximity to the Scottsdale, Arizona or Mission Viejo, California store locations, a love for technology, and the memory to remember all those Windows 7 SKUs, but those are just small hurdles — the honor and courage will have to come from within.
